Five lines to build a SAAS marketing budget from your own revenue
How to build a SAAS marketing budget from your own revenue, scope the five lines it needs, date the sources you cite and review the plan each month.
What to take away
- Derive the budget from your own revenue, then cross-check it against sources you date and label.
- Price five lines each monthagency retainer, paid media, content production, tooling and analytics, plus a compliance reserve.
- Analytics setup is a budget line in its own right. Scope it against the GA4 tag options you will use.
- LinkedIn's pricing page and Google's tagging documentation give structure and unit costs, not a UK average.
- Review actuals monthly and the annual plan once a year.
Why one number cannot answer this
Software marketing spend moves with sector, deal size and sales cycle. A product-led tool at GBP 40 a month behaves nothing like an enterprise platform on a six-figure contract.
Split the budget into fixed and variable groups before you add a figure. Salaries, tooling and retainers are fixed. Paid media and content production are variable.

The five lines every UK SaaS budget should price
| Cost line | How to price it | Evidence to cite |
|---|---|---|
| Agency retainer | Monthly fee with hours split by workstream | The itemised invoice |
| Paid media | Platform rates for your country and audience | LinkedIn advertising pricing, dated |
| Content production | Cost per asset, not cost per month | Writer or editor rate card |
| Tooling and analytics | Seat count plus implementation hours | Vendor quote and GA4 tag documentation |
| Compliance reserve | Contingency plus any advisory retainer | ICO breach reporting guidance |
Each row names what you are buying and what you can point to when an invoice arrives. That is what makes the numbers survive a finance review.

Where UK cost figures actually come from
LinkedIn publishes the pricing structure for its own ad products. Check LinkedIn advertising pricing before you commit a monthly media number, because rates move with objective, format and audience.
That rate card will not tell you whether the spend worked. Google's developer documentation sets out the tagging options for Google Analytics, the layer that decides whether a campaign produced sign-ups or only clicks.
Neither page gives a UK average. They give you a defensible range and a date.
What analytics setup costs
Scope the work in four steps.
- List the events your sales team needs, such as trial start, activation and demo request.
- Ask for a fixed-scope quote that separates configuration hours from ongoing retainer hours.
- Compare those hours against the tagging options your reporting depends on, and drop what you will not use.
- Test in a staging property and confirm the numbers match your billing system before launch.
Configuration usually costs more than the tool subscription in year one. Reporting after launch is the smaller, recurring line.
Example: GBP 9,000 a month at GBP 1.2m ARR
Take a Leeds SaaS firm with GBP 1.2m annual recurring revenue and GBP 9,000 a month for marketing. Illustrative figures: that is GBP 108,000 a year, around 9 per cent of ARR.
A split worth testing is 35 per cent retainer, 30 per cent paid media, 15 per cent content, 10 per cent tooling and analytics, and 10 per cent compliance reserve. That split is a planning device, not a published figure.

Give each line an owner and a review date. Contract terms that add cost after signature are covered in SAAS marketing hidden costs: data and sources.
Compliance work beside the marketing budget
The Information Commissioner's Office expects organisations to report certain personal data breaches. The breach reporting process sets out the duty and the clock, so marketing should understand the exposure even though the obligation sits with the company.
Hold a reserve rather than a full budget line. A serious incident can pull budget and senior attention away from demand generation for weeks. The reserve is what keeps the rest of the plan intact.
Reviewing the numbers
Compare actual spend with plan every month. Small drift compounds, and a platform price change can move a line by ten per cent before anyone notices.
Replan once a year, tied to your financial year. The sequencing in When to set your SAAS marketing budget for England explains how to run the cycle without rebuilding the whole model.
Common questions
How much should a UK SaaS company budget for marketing each month?
Derive it rather than copy it. Take the annual figure you can defend as a share of ARR, then divide by twelve.
Should I still use published benchmarks?
Yes, as a cross-check. LinkedIn and Google give structure and unit costs, but neither publishes a UK SaaS average, so label the source and the date.
How much does analytics setup cost?
It depends on your data model, so ask for a fixed-scope quote with the hours shown. Setup usually exceeds the tool subscription in year one.
Who owns the compliance reserve?
Not marketing alone, but marketing should know it exists. Agree who can release the reserve and what triggers that.
